From: mailto: Below is an excerpt for April… from Cornell University’s Beekeeping Calendar for the North East We have found that the content and recommendations largely reflect those here in Central Indiana
For those of you have obtained packages
BE SURE TO FEED THEM 24/7 - True for Nucs as well
Sugar water:
Use a roughly 50:50 mix of sugar to water
Lighter concentration syrup helps stimulate early egg-laying
Does not have to be exact
Hot tap-water is OK
Add Honey-Bee Healthy or equivalent if you wish
(Use less rather than more)
Where and how to feed
How/Where:
Front Feeder: Boardman-type is OK in the spring
(DO Not use front feeder in Fall
Can attract robbing bees)
Inside feeding:
In empty hive-body on top of the inner cover
Easy to inspect and refill
Frame/tank feeder inside, replaces 1-2 frames while feeding
I find it more difficult to check, and refill
Always feed inside during late summer and fall
Pollen substitute, Protein Patty
Place directly on top of brood frames
Careful not to block opening in inner-cover
Suggest: 1/2 patty
If bees use it quickly, add more
When to start and stop feeding…
Start feeding: immediately… Keep syrup on 24/7
Stop feeding: When bees seem more interested nectar, instead sugar water
Remove excess protein patty, may attract hive beetles
