Thank you to David Hocutt for his review of options for Varroa Mite Treatments. - David reminded us of several key considerations.
- Varroa distructor impacts honey bee colonies in several ways, including:
- Mites reproduce within the capped brood chambers.
- This reduces the number of new bees, their size and endurance.
- This in in turn significantly affects the strength and foraging capacity of the colony
- Mites vector several strains of viruses. These viral infections have a significant impact on our Honey Bee colonies.
- Randy Oliver at Scientific Beekeeping has produced an very good 8-part series on The Varroa Mite Problem. - Most articles have appeared in ABJ
- Several mite treatment methods are now available
- Controlled studies indicate quite a range of effectiveness
- Choice of treatments depends on several factors: Time of year, Amount of capped brood, presence of harvestable honey, etc
- David referred us an excellent summary and discussion provided by the Honey Bee Health Coalition
- Regardless of methods chosen, treatments should be varied in order to reduce the risk of Varroa building up resistance to treatment.
