Honey Bee activity is well ahead of schedule for April
- Colonies are building up rapidly
- Swarms have already occurred, probably from feral colonies
- Some queen cells have been reported.
Our April 17 Monthly Meeting will focus on issues associated with swarming.
- Why do honey bees swarm
- How to inspect your colony for signs of potential swarming
- Managing the colony to decrease the chance of swarming
- How to deal with swarms once they occur.
Guest presenters will be Mike and Debbie Seib, owners of Seib’s Hoosier Honey
- Mike is an experienced beekeeper and a Director-at-Large of The Beekeepers of Indiana
- Mike will address issues associated with swarming
- Debbie is also well versed in apiculture and Treasurer of The Beekeepers of Indiana
- Debbie will discuss the upcoming meeting of the Heartland Apicultural Society to be held in Evansville, July 13, 14, 15
Arrive early, about 5:15 for outdoor activities around the apiary.
- PLEASE: Park in the Nature Center Parking Area
- Then walk back to the apiary
- It takes less than 5 minutes!
Problems lighting your smoker and keeping it going?
- Tim Caldwell will be demonstrating, offering tips and answering questions
Observe as we check out CIBA’s Apiary Colony:
- This is the package installed before our last meeting.
- The colony is thriving!
- There are full frames of capped brood!
- Some brood has hatched & and the queen has relayed eggs in many of the empty cells
- There are good pollen stores
- Nectar is being brought in.
- It is time to be adding the second deep.
