Things to Keep in Mind: Is it too late to start beekeeping this year NO, But time is running short - See handout below Talk with experienced beekeepers Have your received your Packages and Nucs? Packages: Many of You received your packages on Monday 8th Important: Be sure to KEEP FEEDING 50/50 Syrup - 24/7 Feeding is important for new packages Particularly True in rainy weather when bees fly less and nectar is often washed out of blossoms KEEP Feeding until bees begin to ignore your syrup Nucs: (Nucleus Colonies) Have not ordered yet? - ORDER ASAP - Most available nucs have been spoken for - Check the Suppliers list Be sure you location is prepared and your hive body in place Feeding new nucs is Highly Recommended Potential Swarming: Overwintered bees built up early this year Swarms have already occurred! Now is the time to set out swarm traps Examine brood area frequently… Every 5 to 7 days Queen cells visible? (Know difference between Q-cells and Drone Cells) Uncapped (Q larvae visible) - Swarming in 6 to 9 days Capped?: Swarming is Zero to 6 days These are estimates (err on the safe side) What are your options? Make a split: Requires having being prepared ahead of time! Nuc-box or single deep hive set-up Frames equivalent to size of nuc-box or Destroy Q-cells? - Often does not work, they will swarm anyway What if your bees DO swarm? Capture swarm if safe to do so, YOU capture swarm: MUST be prepared IN ADVANCE Seek assistance of an experienced beekeeper Look for Beekeeping April and May calendars in a separate email
