November-December โ Inside Your Hives - Bees should be hunkered down for winger
- Verify that your Hives are Winter Ready
- Adequate winter stores: 80-100 lbs. honey
- Remove empty supers
- Locate honey ABOVE brood area
- MOUSE Guards a Must
- Add Sugar/Candy Board sometime between Thanksgiving to New Years
- Mark your calendar to check hives around first of Jan, Feb, March
- Assure entrance is not blocked with dead bees, Clear with a stick if necessary
- Peak at sugar board to check for any activity
- If significant use, 1/4 or more, consider adding more fondant
- Winter Inspections:
- DO NOT open hive to inspect brood. - (Too late to change anything now)
- You may lift top cover to look for signs of activity.
- It is a Yes/No inspection. - Little can be done in cold weather
- May see some dead bees in front of hive. - Some is normal. These are dead bees drug out of hive by workers
- You will likely see some activity on any day when highs reach into 50s: These will be cleansing flights
- First active in-hive interventions will be in late March, at Earliest
