June 2021
In 2018, the City of Eugene, Oregon, passed a resolution to become a Bee City USA affiliate. This marked the official beginning of a community-organized effort to enhance pollinator habitat and reduce harm to pollinators within the city limits. Since then, Eugene's Bee City USA committee, which consists of people representing City of Eugene’s Parks and Open Space Division as well as a variety of other local organizations, has coordinated an array of events to get people excited about bees and learn about ways they can support these special insects in their homes and neighborhoods. One of the projects that Eugene's Bee City USA committee has taken on is a community-science bee survey in Eugene’s Whilamut Natural Area. The goal of the project is to determine if native bees are using the flowers and grasses that were planted and seeded following the removal of a municipal landfill. The findings from this community-science survey will also expand understanding of the native pollinator species present in Eugene's other urban parks and restored natural areas.
No Mow May Q&ALast month Bee City USA encouraged it’s over 250 affiliates to participate in No Mow May, a conservation initiative that encourages people to stop mowing for the month of May in order to create habitat and provide resources for bees and other pollinators. We were delighted by the response to No Mow May as well as the many questions and conversations it spurred. Inspired by conversations we’ve had throughout the month we compiled a list of your questions related to No Mow May and collaborated with a range of staff from across Xerces’ program areas to respond to them.
