Mites (Varroa destructor), Life Cycle, Infestation Assessment and Mite Control Options
— Presented by David Hocutt

David presented a very thorough summary of the mite lifecycle and how it impacts colony strength and viability, as well as strategy options for dealing with mite infestations.

He also provided information on using either a “sticky board” or the “Sugar Roll Method” for doing mite counts. Both require careful standardization of procedure for accurate and reproducible counts. . (In his view the sticky board is the most straightforward, the sugar roll method is the most accurate.

At the end of his presentation Dave gave us web-links to useful information.

The first is to a page showing a chart comparing mite treatment options.

The second link contains much added information on the Control of Varroa: A Guide for New Zealand Beekeepers

An additional highly recommended resource is information provided by the Honey Bee Health Coalition.

The Honey Bee Health Coalition is dedicated to effective strategies for improving Honey Bee Health
