Another source for bees!

This is for Beekeepers who have not been able to order bees, or who would like to purchase additional colonies.

An IBA member from Northern Indiana, Cindy Sheets, is liquidating several hundred bee colonies. (She will no longer be providing pollinating serves, and will be liquidating hives. (She plans to concentrate on preparing and selling hive products.)

Cindy is offering a single deep hive, 10-frames, full of bees, for $170.  These bees are currently in the Lone Star State, foraging on Texas spring flowers.  They will be transported to Northern Indiana, sometime in April.  The equipment is used, but should be sound...  If I were buying bees, I would not hesitate to purchase these.

Here is what you receive for your $$.

 *   10-frame "deep" full of bees. I would expect plenty of brood.
 *   a migratory cover

You will have to arrange pick up - Near Huntington, Indiana.
 --- It may be possible to work out some "Bee-Pooling Transportation"

Anyone who purchases one of these hives would need to provide the following
 *   Bottom Board (Screened or Solid) - I prefer screened
 *   Inner cover
 *   Telescoping top/outer cover.

If you do not have these on hand, you can purchase them, Hopefully from one of our local suppliers.  You will have until some time in April.

Additional Comments...

Additional offerings:
Eventually you will need a second deep - (Remember, hives typically have two deep boxes, with supers on top.)  An an extra beyond this is a good idea, just in case you have the opportunity to expand to a second hive.
  • Cindy has these for $25, (Also used, a deep plus drawn frames)
    • Drawn frames are a plus, they are "ready to go"
  • There may also be Illinois/Medium Supers; you will need to ask her.

The equipment IS USED, and for some this is a concern. However, I would trust bees supplied by Cindy as much as I would those supplied by Fred Burdell.

In my view, by purchasing Cindy's bees, you actually a bit more than one would receive with Burdell Bees. (See Below). Burdell has each person bring their own empty hive body, secured to a bottom board, along with an inner and outer cover. -- So, by purchasing from Cindy one effectively receives an extra hive body (you do not have to bring your own), and a migratory top cover. (The latter is of limited use to a hobby beekeeper, but can come in handy for some things.)

You would have to drive up to Huntington, Indiana and bring them back. (If several people order, there might be some "bee-pooling".)
Cindy will have to fill you in on pick-up details.

[Fred Burdell is large beekeeper in Southern Ohio. Many CIBA and some White Lick members have purchased from him in the past. His bees go fast, and are no longer available for this year.

I hope this information is useful.

Jerry
